When I was a kid, I built a model of USS
Chicago
(CG-11), which started its life as a
Baltimore
-class heavy cruiser (CA-136) in WWII before being converted to a guided missile cruiser. She’s instantly recognizable by that tall narrow tower and two stacks behind. Neat ship. The original
Chicago
was built in Philly, though, and the modification was done in San Francisco.

Speaking of Chicago, did you know there were once 2 aircraft carriers parked at Navy Pier?
This Wildcat was at Oshkosh a couple years ago. It had launched from one of them and the young pilot had to ditch into Lake Michigan.
